Black people and non-Blacks need to become allies in the pursuit of racial justice and a better future for race relations, a talk hosted by Dalhousie University heard Tuesday.

Presenter Prof. David Divine said “we have no choice but to make these connections with others.”

He acknowledged such alliances won’t be formed easily.

“We need to find ways of communicating with (non-Blacks) which allows us to work together (and) speak to one another,” Divine said during the online event.

“I’m not saying it’s easy – it’s very, very difficult (and) problematic,” he said. “And we tire ourselves out as Black people trying constantly to make these connections. And we are thwarted continuously.”

However, Divine said, “now and again we make headway.”

He encouraged non-Black people to understand the challenges of daily life for Black citizens and see their lives through their eyes.
